Essence of Fear of Allah Almighty







Taqwa places am important position in the human traits according to Islam. It is derived from word ‘Waqa’ which means guarding or saving. It further explains that the protection of a thing from that which harms or damages it. Another word is ‘Ittaqa’ as a verb which means he protected or guarded himself appropriately. The nominative form this verb is ‘Muttaqi’ which means one who protects himself against evil or one who is cautious and perform his responsibility well. In this way, those Muslims who perform all religious obligations like Namaz, Fasting and perform hajj via Islamic Pilgrimage Tour, are among muttaqis.


According to Abdullah Yusuf Ali’s explanation, Taqwa speaks for fear of Allah Almighty which is the beginning of wisdom and curb or protecting one’s tongue, hand and heart from evil therefore righteousness, good conduct, piety. According to Muhammad Asad, Muttaqi person is God-conscious who has mindfulness of Allah’s all-presence and has the wish to mould his presence in the light of this consciousness. In a few words, it can be said that taqwa stands for fear of Allah Almighty, piety, righteousness, right conduct, restraint from evil, keeping duty to God, warding off evil. Muttaqi is the individual who is fearful of Allah Almighty who guards his hand, his tongue, and his heart from evil practices who is, righteous, pious and owns good behaviour.


Once Caliph Umar asked Abi-bin-Kaab about the Taqwa. The latter asked him as to what he would do if he had an event to pass through a woodland full of thorns. Umar replied that he would retain his clothes nearer to him and would pass through the forest with extreme care to avoid from the thorns. Abi appropriately replied that his extreme care if performed in avoidance of immoralities or sins is taqwa. Fear of Allah Almighty is the basis of Islamic society. The qualities of Taqwa and the qualifications of those who have it have been emphasised by the Holy Quran and the Prophet (Peace Be upon Him) along with the rewards which are entitled to such peoples.
